James W. Grier “Jim” is a Professor Emeritus of Biological Sciences at North Dakota State University (NDSU), where he has been a faculty member since 1973. Though retired, he maintains an office and research lab focused on Electrocardiography (ECG/EKG / Cardiac Studies). He holds a B.A. in Science (Biology) and Education from the University of Northern Iowa (1965), an M.S. in Zoology from the University of Wisconsin, Madison (1968), and a Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, with a second major in Physiology, from Cornell University (1975). Dr. Grier’s interests in biology are extensive, spanning molecular to ecological studies. He has a particular focus on the cardiovascular and nervous systems, population ecology, and anatomy and physiology. His research covers a wide range of organisms, including eagles and birds of prey, fishes, amphibians, reptiles, insects, and fossils. He has taught over 10,000 students across various disciplines, including pre-med, nursing, EMT, and other healthcare professions. His teaching experience ranges from introductory to advanced graduate-level courses, and he has advised many undergraduate, MS, and PhD students. He taught a graduate-level course on biological research for 33 years, emphasizing comparative studies across different species and human-made machines. He has been instrumental in selecting and comparing ECG equipment for teaching and personal use. His expertise is frequently sought for ECG machine performance testing, reviews, and as an expert witness. Dr. Grier has co-authored notable publications on ECGs, including a collaboration with NASA and the University of Minnesota.
